Up for auction/sale is an incredibly unique piece of Civil War-era financial history. This is a $10 National Bank Note from The National Bank of Providence, Rhode Island, officially graded Choice Fine 15 by PMG. As explicitly labeled by PMG, this is a verified "Counterfeit" from the era. Historical Significance: During the 1860s and 1870s, the newly introduced U.S. National Currency system was heavily targeted by skilled counterfeiters. This note features the iconic "Eagle attacking a ship" vignette on the front. Unique Markings: The reverse side features prominent contemporary handwriting, including a large handwritten script reading "Counterfeit", used by bank tellers or treasury officials of the era to stamp out or mark fraudulent currency pulled from circulation. Condition: Professionally sealed and preserved in a PMG holder. The note retains solid body, clear vignettes, and historical ink signatures despite its circulating wear.
