Product Details

A jewel-box little plate: a hand-painted Japanese landscape with a blush-pink sunset, a traveler crossing a wooden bridge, a figure poling a boat below, and fine gilt tracery through the willows and pines. Eggshell-thin porcelain with that gentle, gold-touched Taisho-era romance. SPECS: Diameter: approx 5 in - Color & body: hand-painted polychrome enamel with gilt on thin eggshell-style porcelain - Pattern: gilt sunset river landscape with figures and bridge - Border: yellow cartouche and pink floral on fretwork ground, rust rim - Origin: Japan - Backstamp: red script JAPAN - Date: c.1921-1940. HISTORY: Finely hand-painted Japanese export porcelain in the gilded landscape tradition, made for the Western market in the early twentieth century. The single red JAPAN mark, without Nippon and without Made in Japan, points to roughly the 1920s-1930s, the Taisho to early Showa export window. Eggshell-thin porcelain like this was prized for its delicacy and the painstaking gilt linework laid over the scene.
