Rusty Bryant was a tough, bluesy tenor/alto sax player out of Columbus, Ohio who cut a string of hot R&B/jazz sides in the early–mid 1950s with Dot Records under the name “Rusty Bryant and the Carolyn Club Band.” He’s one of those artists that flies under the radar with mainstream collectors but gets real respect from jazz, R&B, and early rock ’n’ roll diggers. The Carolyn Club Band was named after the Carolyn Club in Columbus, where Bryant’s group played regularly. His early sides mixed jump blues, honking sax instrumentals, proto-rock energy, and jazz.
