Introduced in 1865, the three-cent nickel was created to solve a massive coin shortage. During the Civil War, citizens hoarded silver and copper coins, causing commerce to grind to a halt. This tough copper-nickel blend was highly practical, and the 1866 issue represents the second year of production for this short-lived, uniquely American denomination. The coin has been graded and sealed by PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service), one of the top two third-party grading entities globally. Grade (MS65): Representing "Mint State 65," this designation indicates an exceptional Gem Uncirculated condition. It retains its original, vibrant mint luster just as it looked when it left the Philadelphia Mint over 160 years ago.
