Bob Evans California Gold Rush Pinch, "Ship of Gold" The S.S. Central America was a 280-foot side-wheel steamship that operated during the height of the California Gold Rush. In September 1857, while bound for New York, she encountered a Category 2 hurricane off the coast of the Carolinas. The ship sank 8,000 feet below the surface, carrying 426 passengers and over 3 tons of gold to the ocean floor. The sudden loss of this massive gold cargo was so severe that it triggered the Panic of 1857, plunging the United States into a deep financial crisis.
