Product Details

These crystals originate from the renowned Charcas mining district in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, a locality famous among mineral collectors for its complex borate mineralization. Nifontovite is an uncommon hydrated calcium borate hydroxide, forming in specialized geochemical environments where boron-rich hydrothermal fluids interact with calcium-bearing host rocks. These fluids slowly deposit borate minerals within open cavities and fractures, allowing the formation of delicate prismatic crystals. The mineral species was first described in 1961 in the Northern Ural Mountains of Russia, but most occurrences worldwide produce only compact aggregates or fibrous masses. Well-defined crystals suitable for mineral collections remain extremely rare. The Charcas locality is one of the very few places on Earth known to produce isolated transparent crystals, which explains why specimens from this district are highly sought after by collectors of borate minerals. Each crystal shows its own natural growth characteristics, typical of minerals formed within confined hydrothermal pockets.
