Product Details

In 1897, W.H. Grindley & Co. registered this pattern — Gironde — with the British design office. This platter has been around since then. Flow blue china gets its name from the way the cobalt blue decoration intentionally bleeds and flows into the white ground during firing, creating that soft, dreamy quality that distinguishes it from standard transferware. The Gironde pattern features full peony and rose bouquets scattered across the face of the platter, with smaller floral sprays filling the spaces between. The scalloped rim is highlighted with gold daub accents at the curves and handles — still present, still warm. The handles are molded in relief with scrolling leaf detail. At 17.25" x 11.75" this is a proper serving platter — large enough for a roast, a turkey, or a centerpiece on a sideboard. Very good antique condition for a piece approaching 130 years old. Flow blue decoration bold and intact. Gold daub accents present throughout rim and handles — some wear consistent with age. No chips, no cracks, no repairs. One small glaze spot visible on the interior — occurred during firing, not damage.
