Product Details

This uniform is from World War II, specifically between 1943 and 1945. He is wearing a heavy, sheepskin shearling-lined B-3 or B-6 bomber jacket featuring a wide, plush collar. These massive collars were engineered to buckle tightly around the neck to prevent frostbite when flying unpressurized bombers at 25,000 feet. His forehead features a classic pair of Type II or Type III aviator goggles. The white silk or rayon scarf around his neck was standard tactical wear. Pilots constantly rotated their heads to scan the sky for enemy aircraft, and the slick silk prevented the heavy, stiff leather coat collars from painfully chafing their necks. He is just magnificent. Authentic antique photo.
