Mandan- (tribe) which is who the signature comes back to on the bottom-- are a Native American tribe historically settled along the Missouri River in present-day North Dakota. Val Knight Studio frequently named their stoneware figurines after specific tribes or historical regional identities to honor the distinct cultures and traditional attire they were capturing in clay.
