17” by 9” Wonderful antique hand-carved wooden animal figure purchased from a longtime antique shop in Portugal. The previous owner stated the carving was used as part of a traditional Portuguese Nativity (Presépio) display and believed it dated to the late 1700s. We brought this beauty home in our luggage. You can see it in TikTok / IG video from our trip to this amazing antique store! The animal resembles a stylized deer or gazelle with an elegant elongated neck and expressive carved features, standing on its original integral base. It has a rich, naturally aged patina developed over many decades and displays the simple, charming craftsmanship associated with early folk art carvings.
