She was renamed several times before her final voyage from New York to New Orleans. Carrying passengers and over $400,000 in coins (mostly gold), the vessel was hit by a hurricane on the fifth day of her voyage causing a massive failure. Most passengers escaped via lifeboats and makeshift rafts, but her gold was lost to the sea off the coast of Georgia. In 2003, Odyssey Marine Exploration located the SS Republic approximately 100 miles off the coast of Georgia and recovered an estimated $75 million worth of rare Civil War-era gold and silver coins from one of America's most famous shipwreck treasure discoveries. The SS Central America, famously known as the "Ship of Gold," was carrying hundreds of passengers, crew, and an enormous shipment of gold when it was lost in a hurricane in 1857. The disaster claimed 425 lives and sent an estimated 30,000 pounds of gold to the bottom of the Atlantic, contributing to the Panic of 1857 and becoming one of the most legendary maritime losses in American history. More than 150 years later, modern recovery expeditions returned to the wreck site, recovering remarkable gold coins and treasure from the ocean floor. Today, artifacts and coins from the SS Central America remain among the most sought-after shipwreck collectibles in numismatics, connecting collectors to one of the greatest lost treasure stories ever told.   The SS Brother Jonathan met its fate in July 1865 when violent storms drove the sidewheel steamer onto the rocks near St. George Reef off the coast of Northern California. The ship sank just miles from safety, claiming more than 200 lives and becoming the deadliest maritime disaster in Pacific Coast history. Long believed to be carrying a significant cargo of gold, the wreck remained lost for over a century before modern treasure hunters finally located it and recovered gold coins, bullion, and personal artifacts from the ocean floor. Today, coins recovered from the Brother Jonathan represent a direct connection to one of America's most tragic and legendary shipwreck treasure stories.
