Product Details

This specimen is a classic example of hyalite opal (also known as Opal-AN). Key Mineral Features Habit: It displays a strong botryoidal (grape-like) or bubbly texture, forming clear, glassy, and colorless encrustations. The surface has a wet-look, vitreous luster. Inclusions: Minor brown to reddish-brown iron oxide or matrix inclusions are trapped within and underneath parts of the translucent glass-like structure, as seen in images . Fluorescence As demonstrated in images hyalite opal is famous for its dramatic reaction to ultraviolet (UV) light. Under short-wave or long-wave UV, trace amounts of uranyl ions within the chemical structure cause the mineral to fluoresce a brilliant, electric neon green.
