Product Details

This brass, mother of pearl and rhinestone brooch is from the turn of the century, 1906-11, and was inspired by Carrie Nation and her radical anti-booze campaign pre-Prohibition. The axe became known as the ‘Home Defender’ against drunken husbands. Between 1900 and 1910, she was arrested at least 32 times for "hatchetations", as she came to call them. Nation paid her jail fines from public appearances and these pins. The brooch is in very good condition and has the old open-C clasp.
