The AWA was one of the “big three” U.S. wrestling promotions from the 1960s-1990s, run by Verne Gagne. It competed with the NWA and WWE and was the launching pad for huge names: Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, Sgt. Slaughter, Jesse Ventura, Bobby Heenan, Mean Gene Okerlund, the Road Warriors, Iron Sheik, and Ricky Steamboat. WWE bought the AWA tape library and put out this set to document its rise and fall. Disc 1 is a 1h 47m documentary covering the AWA’s split from the NWA, its 30+ year run, and its eventual collapse in 1991 due to WWE’s national expansion. It features interviews with Vince McMahon, Verne & Greg Gagne, Nick Bockwinkel, Larry “The Ax” Hennig, Jim Brunzell, Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, Eric Bischoff, and Dusty Rhodes.
