Product Details

A spectacular piece of textile history with incredible provenance. As shown by the vintage woven label, this garment was purchased from the historic "Fuerst's Sales Store No. 1" on Whangpoo Road in Shanghai, China, dating it directly to the pre-war 1930s era. Rendered in brilliant vermilion red silk satin, the true crown jewel of this piece is the exceptional hand-needlework. The circular medallions and accent motifs are entirely filled with authentic "Forbidden Stitch". This legendary knotting technique is highly coveted by museum curators and antique collectors alike. Provenance: Authentic 1930s pre-war Shanghai export garment. Artistry: Heavy hand-embroidered Forbidden Stitch roundels detailing traditional Chinese pavilions, florals, and scrolling borders. Features: Standing mandarin collar, hand-tied black frog knot closures, and high side vents. Fabric: 100% Antique silk shell with an ivory silk lining. Condition: Garment is nearly 100 years old. Noticeable split/shattering in the cream silk panel on the outer sleeve. The inner ivory silk lining has severe shattering/shredding. There are localized dark age-stains and water marks on the interior lining. The interior lining is fragile, but the brilliant red exterior shell and the incredible Forbidden Stitch medallions present beautifully for display, textile collection, framing, or historical study. Chest: 21" across pit to pit Length: 40" Peking Knot Blind Stitch Red Silk Opera Gown Chinoiserie Art Deco
