The Mamilii traced their ancestry to Mamilia, daughter of the Latin king Telegonus, who was himself said to be the son of Ulysses and Circe. By placing Ulysses reuniting with his loyal dog Argus on this coin, the moneyer publicly advertised that divine heroic lineage to every Roman who handled it.
