Even though total silver production at the mint was massive, the bulk of it was turned into large 8 Reales coins ("Spanish Dollars") for international trade. Smaller fractional coins like your 2 Reales were minted in much smaller batches strictly to serve local daily Mexican commerce. Because they were used heavily by everyday citizens to buy food and goods, most 1849 2 Reales pieces wore down completely to flat discs or were eventually melted down.
