Incredible piece of wartime history! Struck at the Nagybánya (N.B.) mint, this 1849 6 Krajczár was issued by the provisional Hungarian government during the 1848–1849 War of Independence against the Austrian Empire. Operating as a desperate provisional workshop cut off from supply networks, the mint used whatever scrap billon silver they could seize before Austrian forces closed in. When the rebellion was crushed later in 1849, the Austrian Empire ordered a massive, systemic recall. These "rebel" coins were hunted down and melted to wipe out any physical trace of the uprising. While a little over a million originally left the dies, less than 1% to 2% are estimated to survive today in collectible grades due to this aggressive melting. Features the crowned Hungarian coat of arms on the obverse and sharp details on the reverse. Solid VF condition with a deep, honest historic patina.
