Background & History The coin was issued by The Royal Canadian Mint to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the maiden voyage of Le Griffon, a 17th-century ship built by the French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle. It is historic for being the first commercial sailing vessel to navigate the upper Great Lakes.The reverse features a beautifully detailed depiction of the ship under full sail, flanked by the milestone dates 1679–1979. The obverse side (not visible) features the young portrait bust of Queen Elizabeth II.
