Product Details

Extraordinary find! These very early 1900 mints are still in the tin and are still "minty". (please don't ask how I know!) Huyler’s was a prominent American confectionery company founded by John S. Huyler in New York during the late 1800s . This pocket-sized mint tin with a hinged lid dates more likely in the 1920s. These peppermints were originally coated in an incredibly thin layer of edible silver leaf. Over the last 100+ years, the organic candy base (sugar, binder, and peppermint oil) dried out, shrank, and crystallized into rigid, fibrous-looking structures. The silver leaf coating oxidized and tarnished over the decades, turning from a bright metallic shine into the dark, mottled, brownish-grey patina that gives them their rustic, wood-like appearance today. Because they have completely preserved their original shape from the factory, these pieces are highly prized historical artifacts.
