Product Details
This vessel is traditionally known as a Ship's Decanter (or a Captain's Decanter). Their distinct silhouette emerged in the late 18th century during the height of naval exploration and trade. The Problem: Standard bottles and cylindrical decanters easily toppled over when a ship pitched, rolled, and listed in rough seas. The Design Solution: Glassmakers created a broad, heavily weighted flat base tapering up to a narrow neck. This design kept the center of gravity low. The shape made it practically impossible to tip over on a dining table onboard a ship. The "Rodney" Connection: In some vintage collecting circles, they are also referred to as "Rodneys," named after the famous British Admiral George Brydges Rodney.
