Circa 1890–1910 Description: An exceptional 19th-century Grand Tour patinated bronze sculpture depicting Dionysus (historically referred to as Narcissus). This highly collectible piece is a faithful reduction modeled after the celebrated ancient Greco-Roman bronze discovered in the ruins of Pompeii in 1862, which now resides in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. The youthful figure is depicted in a graceful classical contrapposto stance, gazing downward while raising a pensive finger, wearing only a crown of ivy leaves and an animal skin draped over his shoulder. This piece features a striking, authentic "Pompeii green" verdigris and dark brown variegated patina, cast by one of the historic Neapolitan foundries catering to Victorian travelers.
