Product Details

Ancient Ptolemaic bronze attributed to Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II “Physcon,” circa 145–116 BC. Approximately 18 mm and 3 g. The obverse features the diademed, horned head of Zeus-Ammon facing right. The reverse depicts an eagle with spread wings standing left on a thunderbolt, with ΘE in the left field and portions of the royal Greek legend surrounding. Likely struck at Kyrene in North Africa, although older references have assigned related issues to Alexandria or an uncertain Cypriot mint. Reference: Svoronos 1651; SNG Copenhagen 655–657. Dark brown patina with an irregular ancient flan, visible wear, and partial legends. See photos for exact condition. Comparable cataloged examples share the Zeus-Ammon, spread-wing eagle, and ΘE control-mark combination.
