It's signed "Палех" for the village of Palekh, and titled in gold script "Руслан и Людмила," depicting the classic Pushkin scene of Ruslan returning home on horseback through the mountains, bow in hand, after his battle for Lyudmila. Under magnification you can see the fine gold linework swirled over the base paint layers, that rich jewel-toned palette Palekh artists are known for. Black lacquered exterior with a deep red lacquer interior. There's natural age crackling on the lid and interior lining, which only adds to the vintage character. Measures 5.5" x 4" x 1.875".
