An illustrated historical study of frontier photographer Christian Barthelmess, whose surviving images documented military posts, soldiers, Native Americans, settlers, and daily life in the American West. The volume reproduces period photographs alongside biographical and historical commentary. Synopsis Christian Barthelmess served with the United States Army while pursuing photography at western frontier posts, including Fort Keogh, Montana. Traveling with his equipment and working under difficult conditions, he created an important visual record of military and civilian life during the late nineteenth century.
