Issued by the Free City of Basel prior to its dissolution in 1798, this thaler was struck on the eve of the Helvetic Revolution & the end of the Old Swiss Confederation. The obverse bears the Basel coat of arms with crosier & the legend MONETA REIPUBLICAE BASILIENSIS, while the reverse depicts a city view of Basel with its cathedral & Rhine bridge beneath the motto DOMINUS PROVIDEBIT, "The Lord will provide."
