There is a soda and ice machine by the office door. Middle class auto travelers were attracted to stay-over facilities that provided the privacy and luxury offered by Mom & Pop enterprises. By the 1940's there were motels coast to coast. The word motel is a derivative of two words, motor and hotel that came about at the beginning of coast to coast auto travel in the early 30's.
