The 5 oz. silver World War II: Valor & Victory Series Battle of Iwo Jima Coin honors the courage of those who stormed the shores of Iwo Jima, fighting through one of the fiercest battles of the War in the Pacific to push back Imperial Japan and help protect their fellow troops and allies in the Pacific Theater. After months of naval and air bombardment, U.S. Marines invaded the tiny but strategically significant island of Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945. Prior to the battle, the island had served as a staging ground for Japanese fighters attacking U.S. aircraft. Approximately 70,000 U.S. Marines and 18,000 Japanese soldiers took part in the battle. After 36 days, the United States declared the island secured on March 26, 1945.
