Product Details

25-cent fractional note issued by The Bank of the State of South Carolina dated February 1, 1863. The Red Overprint: The red text reading "Twenty-five" and "Issued under Act Feb., 1863." is the only text actually printed right-side up on this reverse side. Key Design FeaturesCentral Vignette: Features a detailed illustration of a Palmetto tree. Overprints: Bold blue numbers "25" flank the central tree to clearly establish its face value. Reverse Text: The red, mirrored text visible through the paper reads "Twenty-Five" and " Issued under Act Feb., 1863. "Cashier Signature: Hand-signed at the bottom by a bank official to validate its release into circulation. It was stamped on the back as a security measure to make the currency harder for counterfeiters to replicate. Why is the text backward? This note was printed using a production method unique to this specific series: One-sided printing: The ink was only pressed onto the front face of the note.
