The Croton Aquamatic is a self-winding automatic from the 1940s and 50s, back when automatic winding and water resistance were new, exciting features worth putting right on the caseback. This one has aged into exactly the kind of honest, characterful vintage watch collectors love. What is it? An early automatic, or self-winding, wristwatch in the WWII military field style. Croton built the Aquamatic as one of its flagship lines, and it ran for decades. The name nods to its water-resistant case design, an early attempt at sealing a watch against the elements. What does it look like? A cream dial mellowed to a warm patina, with luminous Arabic numerals, an outer seconds track for precise reading, cathedral-style hands, and a sweep seconds hand tipped in red. The signed steel caseback reads Aquamatic, Croton, Self-Winding. It is small and elegant by modern standards, around 28 to 30mm, which is correct for the era and wears beautifully on a slimmer
