Moldavite is a natural green tektite—a type of natural glass formed when a large meteorite struck the Earth approximately 14.8 million years ago. The impact occurred at the Nördlinger Ries crater in southern Germany. The tremendous heat and pressure melted surrounding rocks, ejecting molten material high into the atmosphere. As these droplets cooled and solidified while falling back to Earth, they formed moldavite, which is found primarily in the Czech Republic. Characteristics * Color: Olive green to bottle green, sometimes brownish-green * Composition: Primarily silica (about 70–80%) with aluminum oxide and other trace elements * Hardness: 5.5–7 on the Mohs scale * Luster: Vitreous (glassy) * Formation: Approximately 14.8 million years ago
