Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte Heritage Press c.1942 Illustrated by Barnett Freedman w/ Colophon Slipcase Appears to be the earliest Heritage Press edition of Jane Eyre, from Series "E" of 1941-42. The colophon discusses the lithographic illustrations. The British modernist artist Barnett Freedman provided the illustration for this copy of Jane Eyre. The images showcase his distinctive modern style, particularly in character depiction. The lithographs are unadulterated in reproduction, as they were pulled directly from the lithograph stone in London. The lithographs have wonderful color and tonality, with the lithograph extending in the page margins. The characters lack some of his more modernist style, but Jane Eyre is Victorian era, so clearly held back a bit. Wonderful example of war-time book publishing and artwork.
