A striking antique reverse-painted glass landscape depicting an atmospheric European waterfront village nestled beneath dramatic mountains. The detailed scene features Old World architecture, a prominent tower, waterfront buildings, figures in period dress, horse-drawn transportation, boats and turbulent green-blue water breaking against the harbor. One of the most beautiful features is the use of iridescent mother-of-pearl/shell embellishments throughout portions of the architecture. These reflective pieces catch and change with the light, creating wonderful dimension against the hand-painted landscape. The artwork is housed in an aged gold-toned wooden frame with an ornate molded inner border. The reverse retains substantial old wooden backing boards and an older hanging wire. Based upon its construction, materials, subject and decorative technique, this piece appears consistent with late-19th to early-20th-century reverse-glass decorative work.
