But his military achievements mark him out as much more than the brutish illiterate peasant, which many historians describe him as. Extraordinarily brave and physically overwhelming, he was the ideal soldier. However, it appears he lacked the mentality to be an effective emperor. His own troops turned on him and murdered him, as well as his son Maximus, during the failing siege of the city of Aquileia.
