Product Details

This is a 1903 Louisiana Purchase Exposition Jefferson Gold Dollar. This historically significant coin was professionally authenticated and graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) as MS64 (Mint State 64). Congress authorized these pieces to fund the 1904 St. Louis Exposition. Two different 1903 Louisiana Purchase Gold Dollars were made. One had a portrait of Thomas Jefferson, while the second one had a portrait of William McKinley. Both coins carried the same reverse design. A total of 250,000 coins were stuck, by 1914, around 215,000 coins remained unsold and were melted by the U.S. Mint. Only 17,500 coins of the Jefferson portrait variety were ever struck. Their small mintage makes them highly collectable.
