Notes: Marcus Aurelius Severus Alexander was the last emperor from the Severan dynasty. He succeeded his slain cousin Elagabalus in 222 at the age of 13. It was his incompetence as a military leader that was Alexander’s undoing. On advice from his mother (Julia Mamaea), he ended the fight against Germania by buying peace and that was the last straw for the military. Early in 235 the soldiers murdered Alexander and his mother and proclaimed Maximinus Thrax as emperor.
