1688 John Hales — Golden Remains | “GOOD-NIGHT TO CALVIN?” | Case File 038 London, 1688. Third impression and first octavo impression of John Hales’s celebrated Golden Remains, containing his writings and eyewitness correspondence from the Synod of Dort. Includes the remarkable engraved title depicting Reason and Revelation above theologians mining the “cave of controversy,” an image perfectly suited to Hales’s lifelong concern with religious argument and difficult Scripture. Bound in old blind-panelled calf with raised bands. This copy carries an especially intriguing 1821 endleaf inscription signed Jane Carew, recording her mother’s journey to Waterford “a good many years after the Irish Rebellion.” Research strongly suggests a possible connection with Jane Catherine Carew, later Baroness Carew, though final handwriting confirmation remains open. A fascinating seventeenth-century book with both theological and human provenance mysteries.
