Product Details

The Mothership Connection is a landmark 1975 concept album by the funk band Parliament led by George Clinton, and the legendary physical spaceship prop used in their live shows. It merged black musical traditions with science fiction to create a foundational piece of Afrofuturism. The Concept and Mythology The P-Funk Universe: The album launched an elaborate sci-fi mythology where funk was treated as an intergalactic force. Key Characters: It introduced heroic figures like Starchild and Dr. Funkenstein, pitted against the villainous Sir Nose D'Voidof funk (who refuses to dance). The Message: Clinton framed the spaceship as a vehicle of liberation—a "sweet chariot" coming down to rescue people from earthly troubles through the power of the groove. The Live Concert Experience The Prop: Parliament-Funkadelic built a massive, functional silver P-Funk Mothership stage prop that descended from the arena ceiling during concerts. The Landing: George Clinton would emerge from the craft in flamboyant, costumed gear to "deliver" the audience, creating one of the most iconic spectacles in rock and R&B history. Legacy: The original 1970s Mothership prop was later permanently installed at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.
