He stays with her parents, Ben (Hoffman) and JoJo Floss (Sarandon), growing close to them as they navigate their shared loss. Joe tries to be the perfect surrogate son, but his life gets complicated when he falls in love with another woman named Bertie Knox (Ellen Pompeo), forcing him to choose between a past tragedy and his own future. Writer-director Brad Silberling loosely based the script on his own personal grief and relationship with the parents of his late girlfriend, actress Rebecca Schaeffer, who was murdered in 1989.
