A fossil clam from Coober Pedy, Australia that has been naturally replaced by precious opal! These formed roughly 100 million years ago when central Australia was covered by the ancient Eromanga Sea. After burial, silica-rich groundwater slowly filled and replaced parts of the original shell with opal, preserving the fossil in the process.
