The rattlesnake became an important American symbol during the Revolutionary era. Benjamin Franklin had previously used the snake to represent the American colonies, and in 1775 Christopher Gadsden helped popularize the famous yellow flag depicting a coiled rattlesnake above the words Don't Tread on Me.
