Product Details

Beautiful, remarkably well-preserved, 19th-century (1850-1860) Sikes's Hydrometer set used for measuring alcohol proof. This piece was crafted by the highly collectible maker Robert Brettell Bate of No. 21 Poultry, London, who served as an official instrument maker to the UK Revenue. The serial number No. 1576 on the brass matches the original yellow paper maker's label affixed to the top of the mahogany box.Complete Kit: Includes the gilded brass bulb float, the upper stem, the cap weight, all 9 original horseshoe weights. The bone-backed thermometer is by Dring & Fage. In the original mahogany wood storage box lined with red velvet and fitted brass latches. Antique condition. The brass pieces retain a gorgeous, uncleaned historical patina. The bulb shows tarnish at 2 spots. The mahogany box shows minor surface wear consistent with age, w/slight damage in 1 spot on the bottom. The label is beautifully legible.
