Product Details

Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall is a historic live album by jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, recorded on May 19, 1961, at New York City's Carnegie Hall. It captures a rare collaboration between his working quintet and Gil Evans and his 21-piece orchestra. Concert Overview The Occasion: A charity benefit concert for the African Research Foundation. The Personnel: Features the Miles Davis Quintet (Miles Davis, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb) alongside Gil Evans conducting a 21-piece orchestra. The Secret Recording: Davis rescinded recording permission right before the show, but Columbia producer Teo Macero secretly taped the performance anyway. Musical Highlights Repertoire: Combines sharp, hard-bop small-group numbers ("No Blues," "Oleo," "Walkin'") with sweeping orchestral arrangements from their landmark studio collaborations Miles Ahead and Sketches of Spain. Unique Arrangements: Features the only recorded live orchestrations of the introduction to "So What" and a distinct arrangement of "Spring Is Here" by Gil Evans.
