Product Details

Released in March 1976, 2112 is the fourth studio album by Canadian rock band Rush. It is a major concept album known for its 20-minute title suite about a futuristic dystopian world ruled by the Solar Federation. This breakthrough record saved the band's career and became a classic of progressive rock. Track list and Side Breakdown Side One: Features the seven-part title suite "2112" written by Geddy Lee and Alex Life's on with lyrics by Neil Peart :I. Over ture II. The Temples of Syrinx III. Discovery IV. Presentation V. Oracle: The Dream VI. Soliloquy VII. Grand Finale Side Two: Contains standalone tracks: "A Passage to Bangkok" "The Twilight Zone" "Lessons" "Tears" "Something for Nothing "Album History and Impact The Concept: Loosely inspired by Ayn Rand's novella Anthem, the title track tells the story of a man who discovers an ancient guitar and tries to share music with a totalitarian society, only to be crushed by the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx. The Gamble: Mercury Records pressured Rush to make short, radio-friendly songs after prior albums struggled. The band rebelled by filling an entire LP side with a prog-rock epic. The Success: It became their first multi-platinum record in the U.S. and established Rush as icons of progressive hard rock. Audiophile vinyl reissues remain popular among collectors today.
