This plate is highly unique because it commemorates a historic event that never actually happened. “Such souvenir wares were manufactured well in advance of his coronation planned for 12 May 1937 which, due to his abdication, never eventuated.”, as noted by eHive. Following his sudden abdication in December 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson, his brother became King George VI and was crowned on that exact date instead. 8 1/2”
