The volumes are individually dated and numbered from Vol. 1 (1964) through Vol. 13 (1976), with Volume 11 also identified as containing the index for Volumes 1–10. This extensive illustrated series explores the history, people, cultures, landscapes, exploration, settlement, Native American history, archaeology, natural history, and development of the American West. The books are richly illustrated throughout with historical photographs, artwork, documents, and impressive full-page and color photography.
