Product Details

An attractive antique German-language edition of Kinder- und Hausmärchen, the celebrated collection of fairy tales gathered by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Published in Halle by Otto Hendel, this volume presents the Brothers Grimm stories in their original German and is identified on the title page as a “Vollständige Ausgabe” (Complete Edition). The contents include many of the tales that established the Grimms’ enduring place in folklore and literary history, including Rapunzel, Hänsel und Gretel, Aschenputtel (Cinderella), Rotkäppchen (Little Red Riding Hood), Schneewittchen (Snow White), Rumpelstilzchen, Dornröschen (Sleeping Beauty), and numerous others. The photographed contents page alone lists more than 70 individual tales. A particularly appealing feature is the period-style binding. The book has decorated brown cloth boards with elaborate black ornamental framing and lettering, while the spine carries gilt lettering and decorative bands. The interior also includes engraved portraits of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, adding considerable visual and historical character. There are period handwritten inscriptions and ownership markings on the preliminary pages, including a dated inscription that appears to read “OCT 66.” These markings give the volume additional provenance and evidence of its long history as a personally owned and read copy. Condition: This is an antique book with noticeable age and use. The boards show rubbing, discoloration, edge wear and bumped/frayed corners, particularly at the upper corner. The spine shows wear at the ends. Pages have substantial uniform age toning, with scattered marks and other expected signs of age. Handwritten ownership inscriptions and writing are present inside. Please carefully review all photographs to judge binding, pages, inscriptions, and overall condition. A visually distinctive early German edition of one of the most influential collections of folklore ever published, combining the original German text, decorative period binding, portraits of the Brothers Grimm, and surviving historical ownership inscriptions. Your book will be carefully packaged to ensure it arrives safely. Please review all photographs, as they are considered part of the description.
