Product Details

Original February 1946 Hotel Fort Erie guest receipt belonging to WWII soldier Roger A. Marchione of Buffalo, New York, and issued to “Mr. & Mrs. Marchione.” This is an actual period-used hotel document rather than unused stationery or a later reproduction. The receipt identifies Hotel Fort Erie in Fort Erie, Ontario and records registration no. 5827 and room no. 209. Handwritten entries document the Marchiones’ stay, with a total hotel charge of $49.50 and the original red HOTEL FORT ERIE paid stamp dated February 27, 1946. The combination of handwriting, room information, accounting entries and hotel stamp gives the piece particularly strong period character. The receipt also survives with documented personal provenance. Roger A. Marchione was the same Buffalo WWII serviceman represented elsewhere in this surviving Marchione archive, including his postwar Veterans Administration and National Service Life Insurance paperwork. That connection makes this more than an anonymous hotel bill: it is a surviving piece of one veteran’s immediate postwar life and travel history. Hotel Fort Erie was itself part of the history of the Buffalo–Fort Erie border region. Fort Erie Public Library oral-history material records that the property had previously been known as the Mather Arms and was developed around the period when the Peace Bridge opened. The establishment subsequently became Hotel Fort Erie and remained a recognizable local hotel before the building was eventually destroyed by fire. The receipt has crossover appeal for collectors of WWII veteran material, Buffalo and Western New York history, Fort Erie and Niagara-area memorabilia, Canadian hotel ephemera, vintage travel documents and genealogical paper. Condition: Original used 1946 paper document with pronounced period folds, creasing, age toning, handling wear and handwritten/inked entries. The original hotel paid stamp remains visible. Please inspect the photograph carefully for exact condition. Sold as the exact original receipt shown.
