On the Yorkshire coast, where land gives way to sea and stone to weather, Whitby Abbey stands in partial ruin, its arches broken yet enduring. Around it lies a landscape shaped not by haste, but by time: erosion, pressure, and patience. This ring takes its character from that place. The stone at its centre is Whitby Jet, found myself on the Yorkshire coast and cut by hand. It is ancient matter, dark and compact, bearing its history quietly. The jet is not imposed upon the design; rather, the design is built to receive it. The setting is worked in sterling silver, shaped with reference to gothic structure and void. Openings are left deliberately, allowing light and shadow to play across the surface, much as they do across the worn stone of the Abbey itself. The ring is finished by hand and the marks of that work are preserved rather than erased. This ring forms part of the Sanctum series, a body of work concerned with place, material, and the dignity of making. It is not intended as ornament alone, but as an object with presence and permanence, made to be worn and kept.
