27” L, 11”D, 4” H Wonderful antique country store seed display box from J.M. Philips’ Sons of Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. The wooden box features its original colorful “Philips’ Choice Vegetable & Flower Seeds” advertising graphics, divided interior compartments, and some original vintage seed packets. J.M. Philips’ Sons was a historic seed company operating in Mercersburg, with surviving catalogs documented from the 1890s through the early 1900s and beyond. The Smithsonian has a J.M. Philips’ Sons catalog from 1903, and the National Agricultural Library collection includes catalogs from 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902 and later years. The gorgeous lithographed advertising inside the lid—with cabbage, corn, squash, eggplant, tomatoes and flowers—makes this an especially striking primitive farmhouse / general store display piece.
